range
The difference between the least and greatest numbers in a data set.
mean
The sum of the values in a data set divided by the number of values. Also known as the average.
median
The middle value in a data set when the values are arranged in order.
mode
The value(s) that occur most often in a data set. If a data value does not appear more than once, there is no mode.
outliers
A value widely separated from the others in a data set.
circle graph
A circular graph that uses wedges to represent portions of the data set. A circle graph is also called a pie chart.
sector
A wedged piece part of a circle.
bar graph
A graph that uses bars to display data.
vertical axis
The axis that goes vertically (up and down). This axis contains the size of the data.
horizontal axis
The axis that goes horizontally (left to right). This axis contains a label for each bar.
scale
The evenly spaced marks on a bar graph’s vertical axis, used to measure the heights of the bars.
interval
The space between marked values on a bar graph’s scale.
double bar graph
A single graph comparing bar graphs for two related data sets.
line plot
A plot using stacked x’s showing distribution of a data set.
Stem-and-leaf diagram
A table showing the distribution of values in a data set by splitting each value into a stem and a leaf. For a two
Box-and-whisker plot
A five number summary consisting of the median, maximum, minimum, and the quartiles. The visual summary shows the center, the spread, and the overall range of distribution of the data.
line graph
A graph that uses a line to show how data changes over time. A line graph summarizes how piece of information are related.
trend
A clear direction in a graph that suggests how the data will behave in the future.
double
line graph
scatterplot
A graph showing paired data values as points.
relationship
Two variables are related if one affects the other.
positive relationship
Two sets of data increase at the same time, the sets show a positive relationship. If the data points slant upward to the right, then the variables are said to have a positive relationship.
negative relationship
One set of data increases, as the other decreases, the set shows a negative relationship. If the data points slant downward to the right, then the variables have a negative relationship.
no relationship
The plot is scattered everywhere, there is no relationship between the sets of data.
trend line
A line drawn through a set of data points to show a trend in the data values.
