What Is performance Quality ?

Performance quality is the interrelationship between the quality of line, control and variation of dynamics, and kinaesthetic awareness in realising the concept/intent of a performance. Performance quality is associated with the mood and feeling applied to the movement which dancing.

What are the 5 Elements of performance Quality ?

1. Quality of line
2. Th
3. y the body makes shapes in space
4. Use of dynamics to create the ‘feel’ of the movement
5. Clarity of line
6. e wa
7. Analysing how shapes are finished and clean
8. Enhances the movement and defines the shape and intent
9. Projection
10. Dancing with confidence
11. Enhances the concept/intent of the dance
12. Helps create feeling of the movement in dance
13. Projecting to an audience so that the intent is clearly conveyed
14. Kinaesthetic Awareness
15. Feelings of the body’s muscles, joints an tendons while in motion or stillness
16. Create an awareness or understanding of the dancer’s position in space, where they are going and controlling movement
17. Assists in sending a motor program that is correct and benefits the alignment and technique
18. Results in more fluid movement
19. Musicality* Attention and sensitivity to the musical elements of dance while performing
* Listening to the music and queues in the music to include dynamics and rhythm

What is safe dance practice ?

Safe Dance Practice:

The practices and principles of alignment and technique that allows a dancer to perform whilst avoiding injury and prolonging a dancers longevity

Characteristics of bob fosse ?

* Imperfections
* Curved back creating hunched shoulders
* Turned in feet
* Pedestrian movements
* Thought of as unclean because of simplicity
* Odd shapes rather than long lean lines
* Isolations of the body
* Style alike burlesque
* Raising of shoulders
* Finger snapping
* Small sharp movements
* Flexing of hands
* Rolling of heads
* Wore all black, white gloves and bowler hats

What is Kinesthetic awareness ?

Kinaesthetic awareness is a sensory skill that your body uses to know where it is in space. It is extremely important in movement in dance.

* If you are able to feel the muscles activating you will gain a more thorough understanding of your alignment hence improving your technique as a dancer and giving you the ability to dance without having to think about using the correct muscles.
* Improves performance quality
* Motor programs are sent to the muscles by the brain and then they are told what to do.
* If the wrong messages are being sent, then you are not improving but instead creating a bad habit as your brain is constantly sending the same message and you begin to get used to and adapt to the wrong technique/alignment in dancing.

what is Endurance why is it useful for dance and how do we improve it ?

Endurance is the personal physical ability of a person to withstand difficult and enduring physical activity. To improve and increase ones endurance, they must increase and go beyond their pain and fatigue threshold and withstand constant intense activity both physically and mentally. Once this is achieved, a dancer would have sufficient endurance ability required in dance, as it is extremely important to be able to execute repetitive movements throughout a dance without experiencing fatigue to an extent in which dancer cannot withstand.

what is Flexibility why is it useful for dance and how do we improve it ?

Flexibility is range of movement around a joint. It is an extremely useful and important asset to dancing as it can assist in the execution of movement and extension of line. It is also aesthetically pleasing for an audience when a dancer has a sufficient range of flexibility.

e.g. hip flexor stretch will help increase flexibility in the splits and arabesque and creates a greater range of movement in your hips.

what is strength why is it useful for dance and how do we improve it ?

Strength is the quality of being strong and the ability gained to control movements in dancing as a result of consistent training on the control of muscles and joints to help you when you dance. This makes movements more aesthetically pleasing and ensures safety when you dance.

what is Co-Ordination why is it useful for dance and how do we improve it ?

Co-ordination is the organization of different elements of your body or activity that enables them to work together effectively. This is vital as a dancer to understand movements and

Execute them successfully while dancing and improving on your technique.

What are some transitions are what are they used for ?

* Crossfade – can make the dynamic more sustained, show the tempo and create a change of shape and increase dimensions
* Colour transition – can change the mood of the scene
* Freeze frame – prolongs the previous sequence and duration, movements of stillness
* Quick transitions – enhances the staccato dynamic and tempo of the movement
* Slow motion – enhances the shapes used and slows down the tempo

what are the elements of space

* Level
* Shape
* Direction
* Dimension
* Floor Pattern
* Pathways (on the ground or in the air)

WHat are the elements of time ?

* Accents – focus on certain shapes, change in dynamic
* Duration – length of movement
* Tempo – speed of movement
* Stillness
* Rhythm
* Momentum – a movement of slow tempo building up to a fast tempo, or the build up of a song used in dancing to create a suspenseful effect

what are some Camera shots and angles ?

* High angle shot – decreases the size of movement and enhances the wider movements as seen from a birds eye view, change in level extends long shapes and manipulates dimension
* Close up – enhances minor details and shapes

what are dynamics ?

* Staccato
* Suspended
* Sustained
* Vibratory
* Collapse
* Percussive
* Swinging
