Biogeochemical Cycle

The flow of chemical compounds and elements between living organisms and the physical environment.

Ground Water

The water that has seeped down beneath the surface of the ground

Transpiration

The process by which moisture is carried from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves, where is changes to vapor and releases into the atmosphere.

Precipitation

rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to the ground

Runoff

The water, from rain, snowmelt, or other sources, that flows over the land surface, and is a major component of the water cycle.

Evaporation

The process of a liquid changing into gas.

Percolation

The process of a liquid slowing passing througha filter.

Nitrogen Fixation

The chemical processes by which atmospheric nitrogen is assimilated into organic compounds.

Respiration

The process in living organisms involving the production of energy, typically with the intake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide

Combustion

The rapid chemical combination of a substance with oxygen, usually producing heat and light.

Erosion

The gradual destruction of something

Assimilation (biology)

Occurs in every cell of the body to help develop new cells

Ammonification

The conversion of organic nitrogen to ammonium by the action of decomposers.

Nitrification

The chemical process in which a nitro group is added to an organic compound.

Denitrification

The conversion nitrates into nitrogen gas which is then released into the atmosphere.
