Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP)
A 32/64-bit expansion slot designed by Intel specifically for video that runs at 66 MHz and yields a throughput of at least 254 MBps. Later versions (2X, 4X, *x) give substantially higher throughput.
Anti-Static Bag
A silver of pink bag that is designed to protect sensitive components by ensuring that any static charge collects on the outside of the bag rather than the components inside.
Anti-Static Strap
A specially designed device to bleed electrical charges away safely. It uses a 1-megohmresitor to bleed the charge away slowly and protect computer hardware.
BIOS (Basic Input/Output Services)
Classically, the software routines burned onto the system ROM of a PC. More commonly seen as any software that directly controls a particular piece of hardware. A set of programs encoded in Read-Only Memory (ROM) on computers. These programs handle startup operations and low-level control of hardware such as disk drives, the keyboard, and monitor.
Chipset
Electronic chips that handle all of the low-level functions of a PC, which in the original PC were handled by close to 30 different chips. The usually consist of one, two, or three seperate chips embedded into a motherboarde to handle all of these functions.
Class C Extinguisher
The class of fire suppression designed for electrical fires.
CPU (Central Processing Unit)
The "Brain" of the computer. The microprocessor that handles the primary calculations for the computer. CPUs
RT (Cathode Ray Tube)
The tube of a monitor in which rays of electrons are beamed onto a phosphorescent screen to prodece images. Also a shorthand way to describe a monitor that uses CRT rather than LCD technology.
Double Data-Rate SDRAM
A 184-pin high speed RAM that handles two signals per clock cycle. Can be installed singling or in pairs.
ESD (Electrostatic Discharge)
The movement of electrons from one body to another. ESD is a real menace to PCs as it can cause permanent damage to semiconductors.
Firmware
Software that has been written onto read-only memory (ROM). It is a combination of software and hardware. ROMs, PROMS and EPROMs that have data or programs recorded on them are considered this.
High-Voltage Probe
A tool with a very large needle, a gauge that indicates volts, and a wire with an alligator clip used to discharge electricity from electronic devices.
ISA (Industry Standard Architecture)
The type of expansion bus found in the original IBM PC for the slots on the motherboard that allowed additional hardware to be connected to the compter's motherboard. An 8-bit, 8.33 MHz expansion bus was designed by IBM for its AT computer and released to the public domain. An improved 16-bit bus was also released to the public domain.
Lithium-Ion battery
The most common type of battery used in a laptop. They are not considered hazardous waste so there are no regulations on recycling them, however, they should still be recylced.
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
A document that contains safety information about a given product. Information provided includes safe handling procedures, also what to do in case of an accident or spill, and how to properly dispose of the product.
Motherboard
The primary circuit board that holds all of the core components of the computer
MultiMeter
An electronic measuring instrument that combines several functions in one unit. The most basic instruments include an ammeter, voltmeter, and ohmeter. Analog mulitmeters are somtimes referred to as "vot-ohm-meters", abbreviated as VOM.
OSHA
The Federal agency in charge of ensuring that employers have a safe work environment.
Peripheral Component Interconnect
Design architecture for the sockets on the computer motherboard that enable system components to be added to the computer. It is a "local bus" standard, meaning that devices added to a computer through this port will use the processor at the motherboard's full speed (up to 33 MHz), rather than at the slower 8 MHz speed of the regular bus. In addition to moving data at a faster rate, it moves data 32 or 64 bits at a time, rather than the 8 or 16 bits that the older ISA buses supported.
PCI-e
Current generation of expansion cards, this has a serial bus with a rated bi-directional throughput of 250MB/s per lane, with up to 3 lanes. Meant to replace the PCI
Plug and Play
Also called PnP, a combination of smart PCs, smart devices, and smart operating systems that automatically configure all the necessary system resources and ports when you install a new peripheral device.
Amperes
The measurement of the amount of electricity flowing down a wire.
Rambus DRAM
A patented RAM technology that uses accelerated clocks to provide very high-speed memory. Requires the use of a Continuity RIMM to fill unused memory slots.
Torx Driver
A six sided, star shaped "screwdriver" used by some manufacturers. A phillips will not work in the type of screw.
Volts
The measurement of the "pressure" a current places on a wire.
