Declaration of Independence

Adopted by the continental congress on July 4th, 1776 announcing that the 13 colonies regarded themselves as sovereign states. Thomas Jefferson composed the original draft.

U.S. constitution
|
The supreme law of the United States. The continental congress passed a resolution in sept 13, 1788 to put the new constitution into operation with 11 states. North Carolina and Rhode Island finally ratified by May 1790. Originally had 7 articles, the bill of rights was added in 1791. It now contains 27 articles.

Article 1 of the constitution
|
Describes the congress, the legislative branch of the federal government.

Article two
|
Describes the office of the president of the United States, the executive branch. Must be natural born citizen, 35 years old and 14 years a resident of the U.S. Says the president is commander in chief of the armed forces. He may make treaties with agreement of senate. Power of veto

Article 3
|
Describes the court system, the judicial branch, including most importantly the Supreme Court. Also protects the right to trial by jury in all criminal cases.

Supreme Court
|
Consists of the Chief Justice of the United States and eight associate justices who are nominated by the president and confirmed by the senate. Current justices:
