Next Generation Cold and compression therapy

My name is Ashane Herath and this is Martin Lee, and we're from Dynamic Thermal Technologies. We're developing a combined cold and compression therapy device that'll make it easier to administer cryotherapy effectively.

The RICE mantra

So as we know, the Rest Ice Compression Elevation mantra is an important treatment protocol trauma first-aid and post-orthopaedic surgery aftercare, but the tools we use to achieve these conditions haven't changed for years, even though much more effective technologies have become available, such as the Peltier module which we use

Cryotherapy + Compression

Cold and compression have individual benefits including analgesia and metabolic reduction which slows cytokine production.

Compression helps reduce swelling and oedema while also improving suport and strength, but...

Recent studies demonstrate benefits of combined cryotherapy/compression treatment

Studies have shown that cryotherapy and compression act synergistically and are more effective when used concurrently. It is difficult and inconvenient to achieve that using only ice or cold packs. There's a few disadvantages we found with traditional cryotherapy

Why is there a need beyond traditional cryotherapy? P1

One of the major issues was the limited compliance. But evidence suggests compliance can be improved with iceless cuff-like devices.

The temperature can't be regulated with ice, which means that overexposure and underexposure are possible. Overexposure is significantly more dangerous as frostbite is a possibility.

Why is there a need beyond traditional cryotherapy? P2

It's also difficult to modulate, so the treatment does not have a very high specificity to the condition being treated.

Completely iceless, combined cryotherapy and compression device

Looking at the literature we decided to build a device that is completely iceless, and conveniently combines cryotherapy and compression. We also decided to ensure that the therapy could be accurately controlled to suit the situation

Our design objectives

Looking at the literature we wanted to address the concerns that were raised regarding the shortcomings of what was currently available, so we're building a device that will be ice-free, convenient, be able to produce a range of temperatures hot or cold instantaneously, be intelligent for practitioner programming and have sensors which can provide feedback and enable control

Improved Patient Outcomes

The device will be able to produce effective analgesia, reducing the need for drugs as part of a pain management plan, especially for chronic pain.

It will also increase treatment specificity, as the treatment can be more specific to the nature of the injury being treated. We can also adjust the therapy to patient parameters such as BMI or severity of the injury.

Competitor matrix

There are a few other cryotherapy devices around but so far none of them have responsive temperature control. The GameReady device just circulates ice water, so you lose the ability to control the therapy. The ThermoTek device has temperature control but it takes around 45 minutes to reach the set temperature. The DTT device however will be able to change temperature almost instantaneously

Summary

Using cold packs and ice is inconvenient leading to non-compliance, and it's difficult to regulate as the treatment is non-specific

It doesn't take advantage of the synergy between compression and cryotherapy.

The DTT device addresses these concerns by providing targetted therapy that is easy to administerm with compression being built in.
