Structural strain
People who cannot reach their goals thus act deviantly and "strain" the social fabric.
Anomic theory of deviance
A state where either there are no rules or too many rules. In this state a person doesn't know how to act, thus develops a sense that everything is pointless.
Anomie as a social disorder is not to be confused with anarchy. Anarchy denotes lack of rulers, hierarchy, and command, whereas anomie denotes lack of rules, structure, and organization
Differential Association
People acquire behavioral patterns withthe groups they associate with.
Labeling theory
Society "labels" a person as "deviant" thus they act deviantly. The person is stigmaized for life.
Primary deviance
Any original, non-conforming act of deviance.
Secondary deviance
Deviance that later follows the primary act of deviance.
Innovation
Accepting society's goals, but finding alternative ways of reaching them.
Retreatism
A person rejects society's goals and the ways of achieving them and hence "retreat" from society altogether.
Ritualism
People who observe social rules and feel their behavior pointless; people who experience anomie.
Rebellion
People who are alienated come up with new ideals and rules for pursuing their social goals.
