• It included major battles such as the Somme, Verdun, Ypres and Passchendaele.
• It resulted in the deaths of 17 million people, 10 million of which were troops.
• It was called ‘The Great War’ at the time because it was the most destructive War the world had ever seen up to that point.

The Treaty Of Versailles
• War Guilt Clause: Germany alone was responsible for the war.
• Reparations: Germany had to pay 6.6 million the the allies to cover the cost of war damage
• Reduction Of Armed Forces: Germany was only allowed an army of 100,000 men. They could not have submarines or an Air Force.
• Loss Of Territory: Germany lost land to the east and west.
• Austria: The union of Germany and Austria (Anschluss) was banned.
• Demilitarisation Of The Rhineland: Germany was not allowed have troops near the French boarder for France’s protection.
• Set Up The League Of Nations: To deal with future disputes peacefully the treaty was designed by the BIG THREE.
Impact Of The Treaty Of Versailles:
• Germany resented the harsh terms of the treaty. Hitlers promise in the 1930’s to abolish the treaty resulted in his rise to power.
• Since Wilson believed in self-determination, many smaller countries were created.
• Italy did not get the land it was promised when it changed sides. Many Italians felt bitter about this. This aided the rise of Mussolini to power.
