South Africa
Chenin blanc - MAJOR terroir, barrel-aged (sometimes very large, old barrels that are older so not necessarily tons of flavor from barrel)
Sauvignon blanc
Chardonnay - cooler climate wines (Elgin wine region: similar to Hudson Valley), steely and focused
Semions - old vine white blends
Pinotage - love it or hate it! Similar to Pinot Noir; cross between senso and pinot noir; strong flavor that some people really hate; "funky"
Also makes pinot noir (great on the coast of the Indian Ocean especially) - hard to get it right in South Africa especially - newer cool climate pinot noirs are up and coming
Red Rhone style blends - Grenache and syrah led
Cabernets
Syrahs -
Stelembage - near Cape Town (45 min drive) - big wine region near Indian Ocean; most other SA wine regions are within an hour of this area
CA Central Coast
A lot of variety that makes it difficult to define the area.
Santa Maria Valley - famous for pinot noir and chardonnay since the 1970s
Gros Verdot = Cabernet Pfeffer - spicy red, almost wiped out in Germany and now mostly just a little in CA
CA
Paso - Tension between cab varietals (old school) and syrahs/Grenaches (new school CA) - a lot of wineries make both; near SF
Santa Cruz Valley - in Santa Cruz mountains on both sides from South of San Francisco all the way to Monterey; costally-influenced; lighter pinot noirs and mineral, chalky chardonnays in cooler area and in warmer Bay area has a strong, salt and herbal quality that is lacking in a lot of other CA Bordeaux; wild tasting quality, which makes it easy to pick up out of blind tasting; been a grape region since mid to late 1800s. Piney syrahs and pinots from redwood influences. Unique terroir. Tend to be bone dry. Old world wine style combined with new technology keeps it cutting edge.
