Trade Language
a. More than one culture comes together.
b. Ethnoscapes - movement of vast amounts of people.
c. All speak the same language - or speak each other's language.
d. Impose languages if not words upon anothers language.
e.g. Expansion of the Tongan Empire resulted in the use of Tongan words in the Fijian language.
The English language 600 years ago compared to today is the effect of Appadurai's ethnoscapes.
Examples of languages and how they happened
1. Contact languages - Pidgin English.
2. Workplace languages - Jargon.
3. Hybrids - Hinglish is Indian English.
Survival of languages
1. Languages will survive if they are useful.
e.g English - 1066 Anglo Saxon, invasion of the French Normans, Medieval French.
2. Languages have to fit into a number of domains.
e.g. The fewer domains languages fit into, the less chance they will have of surviving.
