Episodic LTM
Episodic LTM is an autographic record of personal experiences. The strength of episodic memories is dependent on the emotions at the time the memories where coded. They are also affected by the degree of processing of information at the time of coding with the most processed memories easiest to remember. It is also thought that episodic memory helps individuals distinguish between real events and imagination or delusions. The prefrontal cortex brain area is associated with the initial coding of episodic memory.
Semantic LTM
Is a type of explicit memory and contains all facts, concepts and meanings an individual has learnt. They seem to be positively associated with the degree of processing that occurred during the incoding of the information. Over time episodic memories will move in to semantic memory as the information becomes increasingly unassociated from the event.
Procedural LTM
A type of implicit memory allowing individuals to do learned tasks with little conscious thought. Most procedural LTMS occur in early life, like learning important motor skills. It is also involved with language and helps individuals speak automatically. Procedural LTM can happen simultaneously with other parts of LTM for example with semantic LTM when speaking.
