Meristems
There are 2 basic types of meristems: Primary and Secondary
Specialized zones where cell division occurs
Apical Meristem
Primary meristems
Located at ends of shoots and roots
Found in buds
Produce cells that result in elongation
Lateral meristem
Secondary meristem
Produce cells resulting in increased diameter
Presence enables tree to grow large
Palms are an exception to this pattern because they lack lateral growth
