Drug: Acyclovir
What is the mechanism of action?
PURINE ANALOG (Guanasine analog)
Inhibition of viral DNA synthesis (DNA polymerase inhibition) = monophosphorylated by VZV thymidine kinase and not phosphorylated in uninfected cells --> few adverse effects.
Drug: Amantadine
Inhibition of viral entry or uncoating
Drug: Cidofovir
Viral DNA polymerase inhibitor
Inhibition of viral DNA synthesis (DNA polymerase inhibition)
= inhibits DNA polymerase, does not require phosphorylation by viral kinase.
Drug: Oseltamavir
Neuraminidase inhibitor:
Inhibition of release of influenza virus from infected cell
Drug: Ribavirin
Guanine nucleotide synthesis
Inhibition of viral nucleic acid synthesis
= inhibits synthesis of guanine nucleotides by competitively inhibiting inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase.
Drug: Rimantadine
Drug: Valacyclovir
Pro-drug for acyclovir
Drug: Zanamivir
