The energy applied to a system increases partly the internal energy of the system and the rest is spent is doing work on environment.

Limitations of first law of thermodynamics
1 - It does not indicate the direction in which the change can occur.
2 - Gives no idea about the extent of change.
3 - Gives no info about the source of heat, i.e. whether it is a hot or a cold body.
