The council of trent
1. The council of trent - a long meeting of bishops, cardinals held in italy. It recognised the corruption in the church and it ordered that: - simony, nepotism and pluralism were banned- bishops were obliged to live in their dioceses, endeing absenteeism- indulgences could only be earned by parayer and faith- all priests were to be fully and properly trained in seminaries (special universities)- books that disagreed with the teachings of the church should be banned.
New religious orders
The catholic church wnated to convert people to catholicism by a method involving persuasion. Catholic orders were founded to preach the catholix message and sttract new members.
Jesuits - an order of priests founded by ignatius Loyala. Missionary priests who attempted to convert protestants back to catholicism.
Other orders : capuchins, ursulines, camelites
The inquistion
A speciql court set up to deal with heretics.
Heresy - any belief which goes against the catholic church.
Two inquisitions: roman and spanish
Spanish inquisition - became famous for ciolent methods against heretics. Torture was routinely used and heretics were burned at the stake in an act of faith or auto de fe.
