Characteristics of membrane potentials
Number of charged molecules and ions inside and outside of cell nearly equal
Concentration of k+ higher inside than outside cell ,NA+ higher outside than inside
At equilibrium there is very little movement of K+ or other ions across plasma membrane
Describe resting membrane protential
K+diffuse out of the cell because there is greater concentration of k+ inside than the outside cell
K+ move into the cell because positively charged ions are attracted to the negatively charged proteins and anions
The resting membrane potential is established when the movement of K+ out of the cell is euq to their movement into the cell
Transmembrane potential
