Describe the reflex Arc.
Dendrite of sensory neuron picks up stimulus (such as pain). This sets off the action potential towards the axon bulbs of the neroun. It reaches the cell body in the spinal cord where it moves through the synaptic membranes and synaptic cleft to the dendrites of the motor neuron. The action potential travels back down the motor neuron where the axon bulbs interact with the muscle and create the contraction.
Describe how information is transmitted via neurons.
When stimulus is picked up, it causes the Na+ gates to open up and Na+ to move into the cell and bring the voltage from the regular -70mV to -40mV, which causes the gates to remain open until the voltage reaches +40. At +40 the Na+ gate closes and the K+ gate will open, causing the voltage to plunge to -75mV. The K+ gate closes during the plunge and when it reached -75mV and the Na+/K+ pump activates and restores the resting potential of -70mV. This is called the refractory period.
Sensory Neuron
Picks up stimulus and relays the information to the motor neuron.
Motor neuron
Receives information from the sensory neuron and provides the necessary motor function (pulling hand away from a stove)
