The goal of therapy is teaching a client to analyze his or her belief system and correct that your rational distortions
Techniques of the treatment is the counselor engage as an active dialogue with the client also the counselor does not need to feel with a client but needs to identify and understand the clients irrational beliefs
For example the client states I’ve ruined my chances with my son by drinking so much he calls me but I know he will never forgive me I could never make it up to him the counselor states his phone call seems to say that he really does care about you
The counselor creates new judgments that are rational and logical based on the data from the clients life
The client is instructed to practice these things these messages so in time they replace the old messages
The client is instructed to practice new behaviors that act out the new messages and reinforce them
