Disadvantages of the
Scientific Method
Reductionist
*reduces to simpliest terms, complex behav to 1 explanation. 1 variable on another variable.
DEPRESSION - caused by chemical imbalance, more stress hormones (noradrenaline)
*reductionist - its a complex disorder, many causes - theory restricts to chemicals.
*more we reduce behav to constiuent components, less understanding (meaning etc)
*are the treatments appropriate/reliable??
Lack of Ecological Validity
*extent findings can be generalised to real life
*often lab -> high control, not representative
ASCH - conformity
*controlled enviroment, makes difficult to generalise
*Question task itself - unrealistic, would you be matching lines in an everyday situation??
Objectivity
*impossible - leads to judging, ethical issues
*humans involved - stereotypes+expectations have effect
*ethical issues - needs of research, rights of P
ZIMBARDO - establish extent to which behav is shaped by stereotyped expectations of a role.
*Lack of protection from harm - p took it too serious, v aggressive
