Periods and commas are places inside the quotation marks
Example: Maxine replied, "I agree with you."
Semicolons and colons are places outside the quotation marks
Example: Heather said, "I will pay"; however, Ian paid the bill.
Question marks and exclamation marks are placed inside the quotation marks when the statement being quoted is a question or exclamation: otherwise, they are placed outside the quotation marks.
Example: Jennifer asked, "Are we going this afternoon?"
Did Brain reply, "I can come today?"
