Why do children play?
-it is exciting and enjoyable
-whilst playing they learn and practice different skills
-they learn about different concepts
-they have fun
-they have the freedom to explore, to experiment, to try and fail
THE TYPES OF PLAY
Creative Play
-when children use different materials to make something from their own ideas of imagination
-allows them to explore and experiment
-end result may no be recognizable
NB to praise them and don't make fun
Imaginative or Pretend play
-when they act out being somebody or something else
-invent make believe words and people
Physical Play
-when children use their whole bodies to move around
- very active
-involves lots of running around
-allows children to use up energy
-usually takes place outdoors as lots of space is needed
Manipulative Play
-usually involves children building or fitting things together
-helps them to be more confident and competent in using all the different tools and equipment needed in life
-involves children developing their fine motor skills and hand eye coordination
The two branches of play
Spontaneous play
-in their own environment
-play in their own way
-play at their own place
Structured play
-in nurseries and play groups
-planed by adults to help develop skills and knowledge
