Prop roots
roots that develop above ground and provide support for the plant
buttress roots
rooys which provide support and help retain nutrients around the bottom of the tree
aerial roots
develop from seeds which germinate in the canopy. roots grow down to the ground and become the "trunk" of the tree
pneumatophore
roots that grow into the atmosphere. usually in waterlogged or low-oxygen soil. lenticles and spongy tissue aid oxygen absorption
rhizome
horizontal shoot growing underground. acts as food store. i.e eyes of potatoes
stolon
horizontal above ground stem. a form of asexual reproduction with a new plant forming at each node i.e strawberries
cladophyll
photosynthetic stem. i.e cactus. modified leaves dont photosynthesise well. i.e spines.
