C-3 plants
Typical plant, keep their stomata open. If temperatures are too hot, do more photorespiration and dehydrate.
C-4 plants
Cannot have stomata open all day.
Stomata open at night, CO2 is fixed into an organic c-4 molecule in mesophyll cell. Sent to bundle sheath cells where CO2 is released and Calvin cycle can occur during day
CAM plants
Succulent plants
Only open stomata at night. CO2 absorbed during night is out into organic acids and are stored in vacuoles until needed. CO2 released during day to be used in Calvin cycle.
What environmental and internal challenges forced C4 and CAM plants to evolve.
Hot, dry environments,
having stomata closed during the day to avoid dehydration.
