The primary path for shedding water over the ground should be away from the building. If water is able to get below grade adjacent the foundation what are the 2 lines of defense to protect the foundation from water penetration ?
1st - exterior surface of the insulation (which provides a continuous means of managing water from the ground surface down tot he gravel and drainpipe (weeping tile) at the footing.
2nd - exterior surface of foundation wall / dampproofing.
According to the NRC can EPS insulation types provide protection from water ingress in foundation wall applications?
yes,
They are not classified as draining materials but they were able to handle water movement at their outer face when tested by the NRC
According to testing done by the NRC can dampproofing be omitted if using SPF to insulate the foundation and footings?
Yes,
Testing found that the foam produced a continuous protective layer over the wall, footing and joint
What techniques can be used to prevent the ingress of water between adjacent insulation boards?
Tightly installed butt joints and/or the use of ship-lap edges.
What can be done to ensure the positive slope away from a building is maintained throughout the buildings life?
Steeper initial grades
More reliable means of diverting surface water
Proper Backfill compaction.
