NAACP (Terms)
- The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the nation's oldest, largest, and most widely recognized grassroots-based civil rights organization.
- Mary White Ovington, Ida B. Wells, W. E. B. Du Bois, Henry Moskowitz, and William English Walling formed the organization in response to the practice of lynching and the 1908 race riot in Springfield, Illinois
Black Nationalism (terms)
- In the 1920s, Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) became the most powerful black nationalist organization in history
- It promoted the organization of an African state for blacks along with racial pride and self-help.
Classic Black Nationalism (Encyclopedia)
- This idea was not supported until the the passing of the fugitive slave act of 1850, african-americans were increasingly distressed with the little amount of equality expressed in this era.
- This movement took off when Marcus Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in 1918. The movement originated in Harlem, New York, and grew out of the social, economic, and political experience of native and foreign-born blacks of the period and was the largest ever to be created.
