Define Muscle Tissue
Composed of elongated cells called muscle cells, myofibres, or muscle fibers specialized for contraction.
How is muscle tissue classified and what are the 2 classifications
-Based on the appearance of contractile cells
1) Striated muscle2) Smooth muscle
Define and list the types of striated muscle
Striated muscles - cells exhibit cross striations at the light microscope level.
Cardiac - involuntary muscle found in the walls of the heart
Skeletal comprised of the voluntary muscle mass of the body
Define Smooth muscle
Cells do not have cross striations
List and Describe the 3 muscle tissue sheaths
Epimysium - dense connective tissue sheath covering the entire muscle
Perimysium - derives from epimysium and surrounds the bundles of fascicles of muscle cells
Endomysium - delicate layer of reticular fibers and extracellular matrix surrounding each muscle cell
What do blood vessels use the muscle sheaths for?
To reach the interior of the muscle
Characteristics of Muscle fibers
-Post mitotic multinucleated syncytium
