What is diffusion
It is the net movement of particles from a region of high concentration to a region of lower concentration down a concentration gradient until equilibrium is reached
How does the diffusion experiment with ammonia gas work
Strips of litmus paper are put in a test tube and a cotton wool soaked in ammonia is put it one end of the test tube. Ammonia diffuses and the strips closer to the wool turn blue first
What happens when potassium permanganate molecules are mixed with water
They diffuse until equilibrium is reached
When does diffusion work in living organisms
There is a concentration gradient
Where does most of the carbon dioxide in a leaf go?
How does the carbon dioxide go there?
And why does the spongy mesophyll have air spaces?
At the top to the palisade mesophyll cells.
Diffusion
To allow for diffusion
How does diffusion occur in the ileum
When there is a higher concentration of food molecules in the ileum than the bloodstream they will diffuse passively.
What happens if the concentration gradient in the ileum is not steep enough and diffusion can no more occur
Active transport
Which factors affect the rate of diffusion
Temperature
Distance
Surface area
Size of molecules
Concentration gradient
When Gases diffuse in an organism they first _________ in water
Dissolve
