An index, ranging between zero and one, of the amount of inequality in a population; when all persons have the same income (perfect equality), it equals zero; when only one person has all the income (perfect inequality) it equals one; graphically, it can be represented as the ratio of the area between the Lorenz curve and the line of perfect equality to the area of the triangle below the line of perfect equality.
