Introduction: Representation.
-Somebody of something being represented in a particular way, stereotypically.
-The way people, groups or ideas are presented through media texts.
-Ideologies work through the use of symbolic codes and conventions which explain or represent reality or our expectations of reality.
-Without these ideas/beliefs audiences would be less familiar with the media text that they are engaging with.
-They would be unable to relate to it.
Paragraph 1: Marxist Theory.
-Representations are encoded into texts to reinforce known ideas within society.
-Ideas are enforced into society by people in power and the media circulates these ideas.
-When we see them in the media, we believe these hegemonic ideologies, we may relate to and understand them.
-I have encoded stereotypical views of women, supporting the idea that men are stronger.
-Close-ups & mise-en-scene - dark and alone - helpless.
Paragraph 2: Marxist Theory.
It is clear that I have supported this Marxist theory as I have included many aspects of the ideology in my trailer...
-We understand that crimes are bad due to punishment after a crime is committed.
-Crime is understood to be violent and wrong which is supported in my trailer.
-We see detectives struggle to solve the crime before the victims death.
-Fast-paced editing from the moment the detectives are introduced.
-Dip-to-black shows passing of time (race against time).
-Can relate to real life as my narrative could be realistic.
Paragraph 3: Time O'Sullivan.
-The media uses ideologies portrayed within the media are there to produce selected view of reality.
-The media portrays stereotypes to support things that we have learned, making us believe that these ideas are correct.
-Over the shoulder shot - dominant male character - supports the idea that women are weak.
-Men typically commit violent crimes - dominant figures.
Paragraph 4: Laura Mulvey.
-Virgin/whore dichotomy.
-Women are shown in a way that males want to see them (male gaze).
-I have chosen to use a female as the victim as this would be familiar to my audience as it is something most thrillers do.
-My female character is both put into danger and helped by males, suggesting that they have power.
-Damsel in distress.
-Sound picks up pace as soon as she is under the control of the male.
-Fast beating heart relates to fear.
Conclusion.
The narrative of my film trailer supports the idea of many theorists...
-My audience will identify with many representations in the media because of things we learn within society.
-By using a female as the victim my audience will relate to the idea that women are weaker.
-Also, by having crime as the dominant theme within my trailer, I am representing things that could happen in reality.
