Intransitive Verbs (VI)
do not normally require complements; their meaning is complete without any additional words in the VP:Predicate
Linking Verbs (VL)
link the NP:Subject on the left side of the verb and a Predicate form on the right side of the verb in declarative sentences. Linking verbs cannot be the last word in statements.
eg. she REMAINED PRESIDENT for three more years. *she remained
He TURNED TRAITOR. *he turned.
She REMAINED HONEST. The leaves TURNED BROWN. *the leaves turned.
Transitive Verbs (VT)
require a NP functioning as a direct object (DO) on the right side of the verb in statements; otherwise, their meaning is incomplete.
They CREATED AN EMPIRE.
The parents ARE BUILDING A NEW PLAYGROUND.
I RECOGNIZED HIM.
Vg Verbs ("give")
they require an NP:DO
They require an indirect object (IO). For this reason, they are also called ditransitive verbs.
I gave my brother the picture.
I have the picture to my brother.
Vc Verbs
"consider"
they require two complements, one of which is the NP:DO. The second complement, called an Object Complement (OC), completes the meaning of the DO and is necessary for the meaning of the Vc to be complete.
I CONSIDER MY BROTHER a hero
I CONSIDER MY BROTHER famous
The Verb BE
Links the NP:Subject on the left side of the verb and a Predicate form on the right side of the verb in declarative sentences.
she IS THE PRESIDENT
she IS HONEST
she IS IN THE OFFICE
