Ego identity
Erikson's fifth stage of psychosocial Development; primary task of adolescence is to develop sense of who they are and what they stand for
Psychological moratorium
Adolescents experiment with different roles, values, beliefs, and relationships; undergo identity crisis
Identity statuses (Marcia)
1) Identity Diffusion: have no commitments and don't try to form them
2) Foreclosure: commitments based on identification with parents teachers or religious leaders
3) Moratorium: actively exploring alternatives and attempt to make a choice
4) Identity Achievement: develop firm commitment
Self-esteem
Declines about the age of 12-13; adolescents develop better skills inmate grow less self-critical; parents and peers are most important emotional support
Cliques
Consist 5 - 10 individuals who hang out together and share activities and confidence
Crowds
Larger group who may or may not spend much time together and are identified by the activity or attitude of the group
Juvenile delinquency
Children or adolescents who engage in illegal activities and come into contact with the criminal justice system
Suicide
3rd leading cause of death among adolescents; 1/10 attempted suicide once
