Algebraic Expression
An expression created from variables, mathematical operations, and numbers.
Variable
A factor that is able to be changed (most of the time, variables are represented by letters in algebraic expressions).
Term
A number or variable, or a number and variable combined together in an operation. For example, in 4r + 3 = 10, the 4r and the 3 are the terms.
Factor
A factor is a number that can be multiplied by another number. For example, in the problem 2 x 2 = 4, the 2's are factors.
Product
The solution when two numbers are multiplied together. For example, in 2 x 2 = 4, 4 is the product.
Power
The power is a number that represents how many times to use the number in a multiplication. For example, two to the third power would mean that you'd multiply two three times (2 x 2 x 2), to get eight.
Exponent
A synonym for "power", exponents tell how many times to multiply a number by itself.
Base
In an expression with an exponent, the number that isn't the exponent is called the base. For example, in the number two to the power of three, two would be the base and three would be the exponent/power.
