Churchill founded the India Defence.
Morning Post and 57 Conservatives saw him as trying to challenge Baldwin. (1936)
He argued to Lancashire cotton workers that Indian independence would lead to restrictions.

Government of India Act 1935 created a federal government with India running internal affairs but under British supervision.
1941 Dedicated to democracy (Atlantic Charter)
1935 Randolph Churchill stood against his fathers wishes as a anti-independence candidate.
Indian Viceroy did not inform Congress when they declared war for India (they demanded a post-war constitution but Britain refused).
1942 India threatened by Japan - Supported US and GB (Attlee proposed a post-war plan).
Churchill sent Cripps to India (Cripss mission) to negotiate with India but Churchill was unhappy about his terms. Resulted in the "Quit India Campaign"
Bengal Famine of 1942-43 resulted in 3m deaths - Churchill didn't send aid.
Churchill believed "White man's burden" and feared there would be a war between Hindus and Muslims.
Churchill had "India on the Brain" just like Communism.
2.3/4 His attitude to Germany after 1933 & His views about rearmament and appeasement.
10 year rule- 1932 ended but Military was behind others.
Began warning about German rearmament in 1932.
1935 unsure of Hitler thought he could "let loose upon the world another war" or "peace and honor to the German nation" but disliked his anti-semitism.
Churchill alarmist: said 3000 per year by 35 but only 4000 by 1939.
1933 opposed an international disarmament conference to reduce arms (German levels were very high) - lead to war.
Appeasement also fueled by a fear of communism.
