Three classifications based on degree of movement
Synathrosis- together immovable joints
Amphiarthrosis- slightly moveable on both sides
Diarthrosis- freely moveable
Joints based on anatomical characteristics
Fibrous joints- bones held together by DICT rich in collagen fibre. No cavity present. SYNARTHROSIS
Cartilaginous joints- held together by cartilage. No cavity present. Eg. Intervertebral discs and pubic symphysis. AMPHIARTHROSIS
Synovial joints- have cavities.
United by DICT in the form of an articular capsule.
All synovial joints are DIARTHROSIS
What is a synovial joint?
Two articulating bones meeting at the synovial joint.
Cavity contains synovial fluid.
Both bones surrounded by articular cartilage.
Articular capsule surrounds and covers entire Join.
