What are the levels of structural organisation called?
Chemical level (eg. Atoms ➡️ molecule) LETTERS
Cellular level (eg. Smooth muscle cell) WORDS
Tissue level (eg. Smooth muscle tissue) SENTENCES
Organ level (eg. Stomach) PARAGRAPHS
System level (eg.digestive system) CHAPTERS
Organism level (eg. Human) BOOK
What are the four types of tissue and where are they located?
EPITHELIAL TISSUE - covers hollow body cavities, organs, surfaced and forms glands
CONNECTIVE TISSUE - Connects, supports and protects body organs while distributing blood vessels to other tissues
MUSCULAR TISSUE - generates heat and contracts to make parts move
NERVOUS TISSUE - Carries information from one body part to another via nerve impulses
E, C, M, N
What are the 11 body systems
• Cardiovascular - blood heart and blood vessels.
Eg. Carries oxygen and nutrients to cells
Regulates balance, temperature and water control
• Digestive System - GIT, Mouth, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, stomach, small/large intestines and anus
Eg. Breaks down food
Absorbs nutrients
• Endocrine System - hormone producing glands; thymus, thyroid, adrenal, pancreas, ovaries and testes
Eg. Regulates body activities by releasing hormones
• lymphatic system - lymphatic fluid and vessels, spleen, thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, B cells, T cells
Eg. Return protein and fluids to blood
Carries lipids from GIT to blood
• Muscular - skeletal muscles (especially)
Muscles attached to bone
Eg. Produces heat
Movement and posture
Nervous system - brain, spinal cord and nerves
Eg. Regulates body activities by generating action potentials
• Reproductive system - gonads (testes and ovaries) uterine, Fallopian tubes. Female: uterus, Vagina and mammery glands
Mammery glands produce milk
Gonads produce gametes
• Respiratory system - lungs, larynx, pharynx, trachea and bronchial tubes
Eg. Transfer oxygen from air to blood and carbon dioxide from blood to air
Helps regulate body fluids
• skin (integumentary) system - skin, hair, nails, sweat and oil glands
Eg. Protects body
Regulates body temp
• Skeletal System - bones, joints and associated cartilage
Eg. Provides surface area for muscle attachment
Houses cells that produce blood cells
• Urinary System - kidneys, ureter, bladder and urethra
Produces, stores and eliminates urine
Maintains body's mineral balance
