Dehydrate edematous cornea
Increase tonicity of tear film by being hyperosmolar to the ocular tissue fluid
Increase rate of movement of fluid from cornea; with application water is drawn from cornea to more highly osmotic tear film and eliminated through usual tear flow mechanisms
Patients with minimal to moderate edema have improved comfort and vision with hyperosmotics
