Gestalt theory
*focuses on the hollistic nature of human experience. it emphasizes the total person rather than an individual with separate parts.
*disagrees with psychoanalytic theory's focus on the past and belief that actions and behaviors are the result of unconscious drives
*focuses on the present and believes that behaviors are conscious and can be controlled by the individual
Basic concepts of Gestalt theory
*person viewed as a whole- mind, body, emotions, ad behaviors
*issues/problems are viewed as integral parts of his/her experience
*individuals do not progress through discrete stages of development
*personality should not be viewed as consisting of separate and distinct systems or parts. instead personality should be viewed as consisting of integrated parts that make up the whole system.

*focuses on the present "here and now" it is recognized that past experiences may influence an individuals present perception and behaviors
* everyone has the ability, capability, and responsibility to regulate his/her actions/behaviors. actions are conscious and can be controlled ad changed
