Brief Background
- Tensions between Russia and other former communist states of Eastern Europe have been growing ever since the accession 8 countries joined the EU in 2004.
- The Crimean Peninsula had been ruled by Russia for centuries when Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev suddenly gifted it to Kiev, Ukraine in 1954. Many Russians believe that Krushchev was drunk when he signed Crimea away, while others believe he was trying to make amends for the Ukrainian famine.
How this conflict has soured relationships between the West and Russia:
- This conflict has soured relationships between these two parts of the world because the USA with support from Europe, fought against the spread of Russian influence in the Cold War from 1947-1991, and now Russia is trying to regain its former influence in Eastern Europe by making territorial claims.
- In order to prevent Russia claiming territory in Western and Central Europe, the US attempted to construct be a strategic missile shield in Poland however, Russia has opposed this.
- Since March 2014, the EU has progressively imposed restrictive measures against Russia. These measures include economic sanctions, travel restrictions and diplomatic measures.
The disagreements between NATO and Russia illustrate two important points:
1- It reflects Moscow's different understanding of indivisibility of security: Europe into two parts- the wider political agreements space and the 'bloc' spaces of NATO and the EU, in which agreements are legally binding.
2- It reflects Moscow's belief that the current Euro-Atlantic security structure not only is incapable of effectively addressing existing problems, but it generates new problems too.
