This is the method of analyzing water to estimate the number of bacteria present and if needed to find out what sort of bacteria they have.

This is because in the event of infection with a more pathogenic bacteria, an infected person will excrete more indicator organisms than pathogens. So it is surmised that if indicator organisms are low, pathogen levels will be much lower or absent.
