This is the Acacia tree or more commonly known as the Cat Claw because of its vicious thorns. The leaves look like a Mesquite but you can readily identify the difference by the thorns. The seed pods are used for tannins and dyes.
The mesquite tree grows everywhere in Texas. Its thorns are long and strong. The leaves look like the ones on the Acacia tree. The long seed pods are used for animal food and draw many Texas mammals.
The blue bonnet is the Texas state flower. It grows in calcareous or clay-rich soil. It can be found in spectacular displays in Texas fields. It is a member of the Lupine family. The flowers create a light green dye.
The Texas Mountain Laurel is a small shrub with a beautiful showing of purple flowers in spring. The red beans are called mescal bean and have been used for centuries in jewelry and trade.
