film badges/dosimeters
•people who are at risk of frequently being exposed to radiation often wear film badges
•e.g. people who work at nuclear power stations and medical staff who work in radio therapy
the film badge has 3 principle layers:
•outer case
•3 metals including aluminium and lead
•photographic film wrapped in paper
different thicknesses mean different amounts of each type can pass through
what the film badge does
1. it measures dosage
2. it can tell you how much and what sort of radiation has been irradiating you
•only detects beta and gamma as alpha will not pass through plastic
•photographic film changes colour when exposed to radiation
