Acute Pancreatitis
-inflammatory disease of pancreas
-causes: alcohol, infections, gallstones
-digestive enzymes activated inside the pancreas
-treatment: fasting and analgesics (more serious may need jejunal tube)
Hartnup Disease
-rare genetic defect
-blocks activity of aa transporter responsible for uptake of large, neutral aa into intestinal epithelial cells
-same transporter is also in proximal tube of kidney
-exhibit: malabsorption of dietary aa and presence of aa in urine
-symptoms resemble pellagra
-treatment: dietary supplementation of niacin
Celiac disease
-common in Caucasian pop.
-inappropriate immune response to alpha-gliadin
-alpha-gliadin: glycoprtn found in gluten
-results in reduction of absorptive area of small intestine (appears flat)
-symptoms: nutrient deficiency, cramps and bloating
-treatment: avoid foods with gluten
