What is nitrogen fixation?
Nitrogen fixation is when nitrogen gas in the atmosphere is turned into ammonia by bacteria (like Rhizobium and Azotobacter). The ammonia can then be used by plants.
N2 > NH3
Where is Rhizobium found?
Rhizobium are found inside root nodules (growths on the roots) of leguminous plants (e.g. peas, beans and clovers).
They form a mutalistic relationship with the plants as they provide the plant with nitrogen compounds and the plant provides them with carbohydrates.
leguminous, mutalistic
Where are Azotobacter found?
Azotobacter are found living in the soil. They don't form mutalistic relationships with plants.
