What is the law of conservation of energy?
The law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed. This means that the total energy transferred by a system (eg a lightbulb) must be the same as the input.
Energy diargams
Back (Definition)
Different ways in which energy can be transferred by heating
CONDUCTION- vibrations are passed on between particles in a solid.
CONVECTION- part of a fluid that is warmer than the rest rises and sets up a convection current which rotates in a circle.
RADIATION- is the only way in which energy can be transferred through a vacuum. Infrared radiation can also pass through gases and some solid materials. Infrared radiation is emitted easily by dull, dark surfaces, and is absorbed and emitted portly by light, shiny sirfaces
What decreases the rate at which energy transferred through a material by heating
Increasing the thickness, decreasing thermal conductivity and decreasing temperature difference.
What is GPE and how is calculated?
Is energy that is stirred because of an objects position in a gravitational field. Any object above the earths surface contains a store of gravitational potential energy.
Change in GPE (j) = mass(kg) x gravitational field strength (m/kg) x change in vertical height (m)
What is kinetic energy and how do you find it?
Energy stored in moving objects.
Kinetic energy (j) = 0.5 x mass (kg) x speed2 (m/s)2
