Ecology
Scientific study of the interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment
-deals with the issues of distribution and abundance
(Where organisms are and aren’t found & how many organisms occur in different places)
Symbiosis and the distinctions between its 3 forms
Relationship between 2 different organisms living in direct contact with one another
-Parasitism: one organism derived nourishment from another causing harm to the host organism
-Commensalism: one organism benefits from another causing no harm to the host
Mutualism: both organisms benefit from their association
Explain how energy flows through an ecosystem
Determined by feeding or trophic levels
-autotrophs(self-feeders): 1st trophic level. Use light energy to make food(photosynthesis). Primary producers.
-Heterotrophs: the rest of the trophic levels. Directly/indirectly dependent on the photosynthetic output of primary producers for energy. Consumers.
-primary consumers: plant or algae eaters
-secondary consumers: organisms that eat herbivores (carnivores)
-tertiary consumers: carnivores that eat other carnivores
-decomposers: organisms that feed on dead organisms, like bacteria and fungi
-omnivores: eat both plants and animals, like humans, derive energy from many trophic levels
