Compressors
Compression is often used to make music sound louder without increasing its peak amplitude. By compressing the peak (or loudest) signals, it becomes possible to increase the overall gain (or volume) of a signal without exceeding the dynamic limits of a reproduction device or medium.
Noise Gates
A noise gate is an electronic device or software that is used to control the volume of an audio signal. Comparable to a compressor, which attenuates signals above a threshold, noise gates attenuate signals that register below the threshold.
Limiters
Limiters are much like compressors. They both process dynamic levels in pretty much the same way though the difference is that limiters have a much greater ratio.limiters are best used for reducing peaks or spikes in the recording without affecting anything else.
