What impact did the World War 2 have on Germany?
Germany was economically strong and it's position was important
May 1949 the FRG was formed by the Western Powers

What did the Soviet Zone block and what was its importance?
Berlin was surrounded by the Soviet Zone meaning the Western Allies would have to pass through Soviet zone to get to their sector of Berlin
It was important as in July 1945 it was decided in Potsdam that each power would be able to take reparations from its zone for compensation

What does SED stand for and what is their purpose?
Socialist Unity Party
To ensure that the new political party was dominated by Communists and to spread the message of Marxist-Leninist principles

Who were the Ulbricht Group and how did they lead to the creation of SED?
The Ulbricht Group led by Walter Ulbricht were exiled members trained in the USSR to spread Communism.
The KPD were the German Communist Party and the Ulbricht Group's job was to ensure they won postions in administrative positions and gained support.
However the SPD the German Social Democratic Party were more popular.
In April 1945 Ulbricht become leader of the KPD and a year later KPD merged with SPD to form SED

There was intense anti-Soviet propaganda by the Nazi's
The Soviet Army looted and raped German women during WW2
And there was no need to have 2 left-wing political parties

What problems did post-war conference at Potsdam cause?
It was agreed that the Victor powers were allowed to take reparations which the Western Allies found excessive and damaging to Germany's economic recovery
Another reason was Germany's eastern border with Poland. As this gave Poland land containing millions of displaced Germans.
