epistemology
the theory of knowledge, especially with regard to its methods, validity, and scope. Epistemology is the investigation of what distinguishes justified belief from opinion.
ORIGIN mid 19th century: from Greek epistēmē ‘knowledge’, from epistasthai ‘know, know how to do’.
Teleology
philosophy-the explanation of phenomena by the purpose they serve rather than by postulated causes.
theology-the doctrine of design and purpose in the material world.
ORIGIN mid 18th century (denoting the branch of philosophy that deals with ends or final causes): from modern Latin teleologia, from Greek telos ‘end’ + -logia (see -logy).
