Microscopic Morphology
Includes the morphology, arrangement, structural characteristics, and the staining characteristics of the cells.
Growth Characteristics of Colonies
Refers to characteristics of growth on solid media, consisting of texture, size and shape, and production of pigment.
Physiology
Refers to the preferred temperature for optimum growth of the bacteria. As well as the bacteria's relationship to oxygen, pH range preference, and Osmotic tolerances.
Nutritional Requirments
Refers to which nutrients can be metabolized, as well as which metabolic waste is produced.
Genetic Characteristics
Protein Analysis
Identification by comparing Protein samples for similarities. Similar process to Genetic Characteristics.
Phage Typing
Involves the use of Bacteriophage's, which will attach to very specific receptors on the surface of the bacteria. The strain of bacterium can be determined by it's susceptibility to certain phages.
Serology
The process of identifying a bacteria based upon the type of antibodies that are produced.
