Classical Period - Time and Composers
1750 - 1827. Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven.
Classical Period - Harmony
Diatonic harmony, modulations to related keys, use of primary chords. Clear cadences.
Classical Period - Instrumentation
Classically proportioned orchestra. Small string section with pairs of flutes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, oboes and timpani. String quartet (2 violins, viola, cello). Piano instead of harpsichord.
Classical Period - Melody/Rhythm
Based on scales/arpeggios. Simple, elegant melodies in 4 bar phrases. Equal phrase lengths. Some ornamentation.
Classical Period - Dynamics
Could be terraced but likely to be graduated (cresc. or dim.)
Classical Period - Symphonies
Large scale orchestral works, in three movements (fast-slow-fast).
Classical Period - Sonata
Written for solo piano or an instrument with piano accompaniment.
